In international shipping, the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is a critical requirement to ensure vessel safety and regulatory compliance. VGM refers to the total weight of a container, including its cargo, packaging materials, and the container itself. Accurate submission of VGM is the responsibility of every shipper and plays a vital role in maintaining smooth supply chain operations.
Previously, shippers were required to submit VGM alongside their Bill of Lading instructions. Now, a more streamlined process allows for easier VGM submission.
How to Submit VGM via the "Order Folder"
- Log in to your account: Visit the official website and click the Account icon in the top-right corner. Enter your username and password to log in.
- Access the VGM submission page: After logging in, navigate to the Management tab in the top menu. Select Submit Verified Gross Mass (VGM) from the dropdown.
- Select the relevant order: On the VGM submission page, locate the order for which you need to submit VGM. Click the Submit Verified Gross Mass (VGM) button next to the order.
- Update VGM details: In the order details section, find the container requiring VGM submission. Click Update Verified Gross Mass (VGM) and enter the accurate weight information.
Who Can Submit VGM?
To ensure accuracy and accountability, the following parties are authorized to submit VGM:
- Booking party: The original booking party holds primary responsibility for VGM submission.
- Contracting party: The entity that has entered into a contract with the shipping line.
-
Modified shipper/documentary shipper/shipper:
If shipper details change, submission follows this priority order:
- Documentary shipper (if applicable)
- Shipper
- Transport document recipient: The party responsible for receiving shipping documents.
- Export freight forwarder: The agent handling export logistics on behalf of the shipper.
Note: Submission rights follow the above priority sequence. For instance, if both a documentary shipper and shipper exist, only the documentary shipper may submit VGM.
Understanding VGM Requirements
VGM regulations are designed to prevent accidents caused by misdeclared container weights. Proper calculation and submission help maintain maritime safety standards and operational efficiency. Shippers must ensure their weighing methods comply with international guidelines, using certified equipment to determine container weights accurately.
