In an unexpected industry crossover, a traditional construction firm in Chongqing has broken ground on a major pet food manufacturing facility, signaling China's accelerating embrace of pet-related industries.
From Building Homes to Making Pet Food
The Mengdudu project, a 100-acre intelligent pet food production base in Chongqing's Qijiang District, represents a $43 million investment by construction company YAZHU. Scheduled for completion by late 2025, the facility will become southwestern China's largest modern pet food production complex.
This strategic pivot reflects both corporate adaptation to market changes and regional economic restructuring. Qijiang District's improved business environment has attracted numerous high-end manufacturing projects, with the pet industry emerging as a priority sector.
Comprehensive Pet Nutrition Solutions
The new facility will produce a complete range of pet products including dry food, wet food, and cat litter. More significantly, it plans to develop scientifically-formulated nutrition systems tailored to pets' breed, age, and health conditions—moving beyond basic sustenance to optimized pet health.
Chongqing's Strategic Push Into Pet Economy
This project forms part of Chongqing's systematic development of pet-related industries:
- Research Infrastructure: The city established China's first pet life science research institute in 2021, focusing on genetic technology, veterinary medicine, and AI applications in pet care.
- Quality Manufacturing: Existing facilities like Bolibio's 100,000-class cleanroom pet food factory already export to 26 countries using enzyme technology for pet dental health.
- Global Integration: The 2025 launch of Tmall Global's Southwest production base will streamline cross-border pet food distribution, with partnerships established across Europe and Oceania.
The Rising Pet Economy
China's pet industry continues rapid expansion as pet ownership grows and consumer spending on animal companions increases. The sector now spans food, healthcare, grooming, and even memorial services.
While challenges like inconsistent quality standards persist, the market appears poised for further professionalization. Projects like Mengdudu demonstrate how traditional industries are adapting to capture opportunities in this evolving economic sector.
