In the era of globalization, seaports have become increasingly vital to international trade. As Taiwan's largest international port, Kaohsiung Port serves as a critical gateway for cargo imports and exports, playing an indispensable role in maritime transportation.
Kaohsiung Port handles approximately half of Taiwan's total port cargo throughput, ranking 13th globally in terms of volume. Its significance cannot be overstated.
Situated at the heart of Kaohsiung City, the port spans six administrative districts, boasting an exceptional geographic layout with expansive harbor areas and abundant hinterlands. Blessed by favorable natural conditions, the port enjoys mild weather year-round, nestled between mountains and the sea, making it a natural transportation hub.
Over time, Kaohsiung Port has continuously expanded its handling capacity. Currently, its fairways stretch 18 kilometers in total—12 kilometers for the main channel and 6 kilometers for tributaries—effectively accommodating vessels of all sizes for seamless entry and exit.
In terms of terminal infrastructure, Kaohsiung Port features 121 berths with a combined length reaching 27,788 meters, capable of simultaneously berthing 152 ships—a testament to its exceptional service capabilities. Managed and operated by Kaohsiung Port Branch under Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC), the port ensures both efficiency and safety in its operations.
Furthermore, in 2014, Kaohsiung Port achieved EcoPorts certification—the first port in the Asia-Pacific region to receive this prestigious recognition for environmental sustainability. This accomplishment not only elevated Kaohsiung Port's global reputation but also underscored its unwavering commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection.
This milestone further strengthened Kaohsiung Port's competitive edge among global ports while injecting new momentum into Taiwan's economy. By leveraging its prime location, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and eco-conscious initiatives, Kaohsiung Port is steadily advancing toward becoming a frontrunner in the international shipping market.
