As e-commerce continues to grow and consumers increasingly rely on timely deliveries, LaserShip/OnTrac has announced the opening of a massive new sorting center near Philadelphia. The facility, strategically positioned to serve New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, aims to enhance operational capabilities ahead of the crucial holiday shopping season.
The 326,970-square-foot facility in Logan Township, New Jersey, features fully automated small-package sorting technology capable of processing up to 31,000 parcels per hour. This represents a significant upgrade to the carrier's network, which spans 30 states and Washington, D.C.
Preparing for Peak Season
The timing of the facility's opening reflects LaserShip/OnTrac's strategy to address capacity challenges experienced during previous peak seasons. The company plans to hire over 400 full-time and seasonal employees to staff the new operation. This expansion comes after the merged entity faced difficulties handling 2021's holiday demand surge, as noted in a Moody's report.
Strategic Expansion
The company, formed through the 2021 merger of East Coast-focused LaserShip and West Coast specialist OnTrac, has been positioning itself as a national alternative to FedEx and UPS. Earlier this year, it launched a cross-country service leveraging the combined networks, offering three-to-five-day transit times across the continental U.S.
Industry analysts view the new facility as a strategic move to strengthen the company's position in key markets. Cathy Morrow Roberson, Senior Analyst at supply chain consultancy Armstrong & Associates, noted, "This investment in automation and workforce demonstrates LaserShip/OnTrac's commitment to improving efficiency, reducing delivery times, and enhancing customer satisfaction."
Local Economic Impact
Beyond operational improvements, the facility is expected to provide economic benefits to the region. Logan Township Mayor Frank Minor welcomed the development, stating it would create employment opportunities and reinforce the area's position as a logistics hub.
The company has implemented comprehensive training programs and operational optimizations to ensure smooth facility launch. LaserShip/OnTrac has also emphasized its commitment to corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability initiatives.
With additional sorting centers and delivery stations planned nationwide, LaserShip/OnTrac appears determined to expand its footprint and challenge established carriers. However, the company faces intensifying competition from both traditional players like FedEx and UPS, and emerging threats such as Amazon's growing logistics network.
As e-commerce demands continue evolving, the company's ability to innovate and adapt will be crucial. The upcoming holiday season will serve as an important test for the new facility's capacity to handle peak volumes while maintaining service quality.
