Imagine flying from bustling Paris to tranquil French countryside towns without the roar of jet engines, but rather the quiet hum of hydrogen fuel cells. This vision of sustainable aviation is becoming reality through French regional carrier Amelia, which is leading the industry's green transformation.
A Distinctive Regional Carrier
Amelia, part of the Regourd Aviation Group since its 2019 founding, has carved a unique niche in the competitive aviation sector. The parent company, established in 1976 by Alain Regourd, initially focused on aircraft trading before expanding into operations and creating a diversified aviation ecosystem.
The airline's operations span charter flights, ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) services, cargo transport, and medical evacuations. In November 2022, Amelia joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA), marking a significant milestone in its development and global recognition.
Charting a Sustainable Course
In an exclusive interview, Amelia's Communications Secretary Malika Lentini outlined the company's environmental ambitions: "We're a fully integrated French aviation group with extensive passenger transport expertise. Our diversified operations allow us to respond flexibly to market demands."
The airline serves key regional routes from Paris, Rodez, Brive, Amsterdam, and Strasbourg, including operating flights for Air France between Paris and Aurillac/Castres. These connections prove vital for regional economies lacking high-speed rail infrastructure.
IATA Membership and Industry Collaboration
Amelia's 2022 IATA membership followed its IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) certification in 2021. "This recognition validates our commitment to highest quality standards," Lentini noted. "It provides valuable industry insights and collaboration opportunities as we address sustainability challenges."
The airline fully supports IATA's 2050 net-zero emissions initiative. "Sustainability is no longer optional but imperative. Collective action is essential for meaningful progress," Lentini emphasized.
The Hydrogen Revolution
In 2022, Amelia partnered with Universal Hydrogen to pioneer hydrogen aviation technology. The agreement includes purchasing three hydrogen conversion kits for ATR 72-600 aircraft, retrofitting planes, and establishing green hydrogen supply at French airports.
The collaboration positions Amelia as a European leader in regional aviation decarbonization. A successful test flight occurred in February 2023, with plans to become Europe's first hydrogen-powered regional airline by 2026 using modified ATR72-UH2 aircraft.
Amelia is coordinating with airports, hydrogen producers, airlines, and regulatory bodies to develop France's hydrogen aviation infrastructure. The company also aims to lead in next-generation aircraft maintenance through technician training and service development.
A Blueprint for Sustainable Aviation
Amelia's model demonstrates how environmental responsibility can enhance competitiveness. Through technological innovation, operational optimization, and industry collaboration, the airline shows that economic and ecological objectives can align.
As aviation faces mounting pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, Amelia's hydrogen initiative offers a promising pathway for regional operators worldwide. The airline's progress will be closely watched as the industry races toward its 2050 sustainability targets.
