As international packages make their way across oceans toward Canada, a potential labor disruption threatens to disrupt delivery timelines. Canada Post may face another strike as early as May 22, when the current collective agreement between management and workers expires.
History Repeating: Postal Workers May Return to Picket Lines
Just five months after the November 2022 nationwide strike, Canada Post employees could once again walk off the job. This would likely cause significant delays for international shipments relying on Canada Post's delivery network, potentially stranding packages in transit.
Contingency Measures Implemented
In anticipation of possible service disruptions, several precautionary measures have been enacted:
- Immediate suspension of all Canada Post delivery channels, including Canada-specific shipping lines and consolidated freight services (both standard and special cargo)
- Active monitoring of in-transit shipments with recommendations for customers to track packages through Canada Post's official website
- Alternative carrier arrangements for packages already in warehouses but not yet dispatched
UPS Delivery Specifications
For undelivered Canadian-bound packages, UPS will serve as the alternative carrier with specific requirements:
- Maximum single package weight: 22kg (heavier items will be rejected)
- Maximum single package perimeter: 260cm (calculated as length + (width + height) × 2)
- Remote area surcharge: CAD$230 per shipment where applicable
EMS Service Status
While postal services through EMS haven't officially announced suspensions, recipients should prepare for potential backlogs and delays if labor action occurs. Customers are advised to inform recipients about possible delivery disruptions.
