ISLIP, NY - MacArthur Airport, commonly known as Islip Airport, serves as a vital transportation nexus for New York's Long Island region. Strategically located in Suffolk County, the airport lies just 72 miles from Manhattan's bustling core and 72 miles from the iconic Montauk Point.
Owned and operated by the Town of Islip, this aviation facility has evolved from its military origins into a modern commercial airport serving nearly 2 million passengers annually.
FROM WAR EFFORT TO CIVILIAN SERVICE
Originally constructed in 1942 to support U.S. military operations during World War II, the airport underwent significant transformations before being renamed in the 1960s to honor General Douglas MacArthur, the legendary five-star Army commander.
The 1,311-acre facility, situated at 99 feet above sea level, now boasts four asphalt runways - including a 7,005-foot primary runway (06/24) - capable of handling modern commercial aircraft. Two dedicated helipads enhance the airport's versatility for emergency medical services and short-haul operations.
MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE MEETS GROWING DEMAND
A $65 million terminal expansion between 2004-2006 marked a turning point for the airport, featuring a new Southwest Airlines concourse with eight gates. The central hall was rededicated to honor military veterans, reflecting the airport's commitment to community values.
Today, MacArthur's terminal complex comprises two concourses (A and B) with a combined 17 gates, all equipped with modern passenger amenities. The 2011 activation of a new air traffic control tower significantly improved operational efficiency, reducing delays by 22% in its first year of operation.
CONNECTING LONG ISLAND TO AMERICA
As Long Island's third-largest commercial airport, MacArthur serves as a crucial link for Nassau and Suffolk counties. American Eagle and Southwest Airlines operate multiple daily flights to major destinations including:
- Florida (Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, West Palm Beach)
- Midwestern hubs (Chicago, St. Louis, Denver)
- Northeast corridors (Philadelphia, Baltimore)
The airport continues to enhance passenger experience with upgraded dining options, retail spaces, and free high-speed WiFi throughout terminals. ADA-compliant facilities ensure accessibility for all travelers.
SUSTAINABLE GROWTH INITIATIVES
Environmental stewardship remains a priority, with noise abatement programs and emissions reduction strategies implemented in coordination with local environmental groups. Recent solar panel installations have reduced the facility's carbon footprint by 15% since 2018.
With passenger volumes projected to grow 4% annually, airport officials plan additional terminal upgrades and potential runway extensions to accommodate larger aircraft by 2026.
"MacArthur Airport represents the perfect balance of convenience and capability," said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. "We're committed to maintaining our position as Long Island's most accessible air travel option while respecting our community and environment."
