Port Overview
Located in Libya's Al Wahat District along the eastern coast of the Gulf of Sidra on the Mediterranean, Zueitina Port features open-sea mooring and loading capabilities. Its strategic position makes it one of Libya's key petroleum export hubs. With coordinates at 30°51′N, 20°00′E, the port was constructed on saline lands utilizing experienced local workforce.
Resources and Production
Libya, often called "Africa's Oil Giant," boasts proven reserves of approximately 45 billion barrels. Its low-sulfur, high-quality crude enjoys strong market competitiveness due to relatively low extraction costs. At its peak, Zueitina handled annual crude outputs reaching 160 million tons, though OPEC supply restrictions have moderated recent volumes. The port maintains robust transportation and processing capacities.
The facility includes a refinery with 20 million tons annual processing capacity and a 217-kilometer pipeline connecting to the Intisar oilfield, capable of transporting 50 million tons yearly. These installations cement Zueitina's pivotal role in Libya's economy, where oil typically contributes 50-70% of GDP, with most production destined for export.
Climate Conditions
Zueitina experiences a Mediterranean subtropical climate, with summer temperatures reaching 35°C (95°F). Winters bring strong northwestern winds, frequent high waves, and tidal surges. Annual precipitation averages 550mm, with morning fog occasionally disrupting navigation during spring and summer.
Port Facilities
The terminal operates five offshore berths (A-E) with varying distances from shore and water depths:
- Berth A: 3 nautical miles offshore, ~30m depth
- Berth B: 2.5 nautical miles, ~21m depth
- Berth C: 3 nautical miles, ~30m depth
- Berth D: 2.5 nautical miles, ~24m depth
- Berth E: 3 nautical miles, ~30m depth
Loading systems feature 42-48 inch underwater pipelines with crude transfer rates reaching 6,800 tons/hour. The LPG berth accommodates vessels up to 213m length with 9m draft, handling 950 tons/hour. Notably, the port lacks tugboat assistance—mooring relies on rope-equipped launches.
Export Operations
Zueitina specializes exclusively in petroleum products. Its efficient infrastructure continues driving Libya's strategic position in global energy markets, attracting sustained investor interest as the nation develops its hydrocarbon potential.
