As the waves of the Atlantic crash against Canada’s coastline, a vital military presence quietly stands watch over these waters. The Shearwater Airport, a historic military airfield, serves as the critical hub for the Royal Canadian Navy’s maritime helicopter operations in the Atlantic region.

Located in the Shearwater area along the eastern coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Shearwater Airport (IATA: YAW, ICAO: CYAW) is operated by the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). Established in August 1918, it holds the distinction of being Canada’s second-oldest military airfield, carrying a legacy of strategic significance.

The airfield sits at an elevation of 51 meters (167 feet). Originally equipped with two asphalt runways—Runway 10/28 (1,735 meters × 61 meters) and Runway 16/34 (2,743 meters × 61 meters)—it now operates with Runway 10/28 as its primary active runway, while Runway 16/34 remains closed. The functional runway supports helicopter operations, ensuring seamless takeoffs and landings for naval aircraft.

Today, Shearwater Airport’s primary mission is to provide helicopter support for Royal Canadian Navy vessels deployed across the Atlantic. Beyond serving as a launch and recovery platform for shipborne helicopters, it functions as a vital maintenance and supply base. This ensures that naval aviation forces remain ready to respond to emergencies, safeguarding Canada’s maritime sovereignty and security in the Atlantic.

Though unassuming in appearance, Shearwater Airport plays an indispensable role in Canada’s defense infrastructure. Through its specialized operations and strategic positioning, it continues to uphold national security with quiet efficiency.
