In a significant move amid the global aviation recovery, China Eastern Airlines has announced it will commence direct flights between Shanghai and Copenhagen starting July 17 . The new route will operate three times weekly using Airbus A330-200 aircraft configured with 262 seats, including 30 lie-flat business class seats designed to cater to diverse passenger needs.
Growing Demand in Scandinavian Travel Hub
The launch comes as Copenhagen Airport reports robust growth, handling 6 million passengers in the first quarter of 2025—a 6% year-over-year increase. With the summer travel season approaching, airlines worldwide are adjusting schedules and introducing new routes, and the Danish capital is no exception. The airport has recently added 31 new routes , 21 of which are operated by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), signaling strong market recovery.
Currently, Copenhagen Airport serves 315 routes to 171 destinations, connecting to most major European cities that account for over 85% of its total passenger traffic. Recent international expansions include Delta Air Lines' new Minneapolis route and SAS additions to Seattle, Nuuk, and Seoul Incheon. Norwegian Air has also launched multiple summer seasonal routes including direct flights to Bratislava, Newcastle, Sarajevo, and Tangier.
Strengthening China-Nordic Connectivity
China Eastern's new service provides travelers with enhanced convenience and plays a strategic role in connecting China with Northern Europe. The route serves both business travelers and leisure passengers seeking to visit Copenhagen—the "Fairy Tale Capital" renowned for its historic charm and modern Scandinavian design.
As global air travel continues its post-pandemic rebound, industry analysts predict the Shanghai-Copenhagen route will become an important bridge between Asia and Scandinavia, potentially inspiring more travelers to fulfill their dream journeys to this picturesque destination.
